PATH National "Level 5 Professional Development Diploma in Management Studies" (DMS)

The Professional Development Diploma in Management Studies (DMS) is a knowledge and skills-based programme aiming to develop managers with experience or limited experience or those seeking a management role. It is nationally validated by Edexcel (BTEC) at level 5. Successful students can progress to our Level 7 Professional Development Advanced Diploma in Management Studies (Adv.DMS).
The skill development areas are linked to national best practice standards (competences) originally developed by the Management Charter Initiative (MCI), the lead body for Management National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs), now the Management Education & Training Organisation (METO).
Programme Objectives
- To provide a professional qualification for participants who are practising managers or who wish to make a career in management
- To provide the knowledge and understanding which underpins the management skills at level 5
- To develop the skills of practising managers and those aspiring to management positions
- To promote good practice in management
- To develop innovation and work in a creative way
- To enable managers to handle change effectively
- To provide a progression route to other advanced management qualifications
- To provide students with the basis for further development
Suitable for:
Practising or aspiring managers or equivalent categories in public and private sector organisations.
Entry Requirements
Typical applicants for the Diploma are likely to satisfy at least one of the following criteria:
- Appropriate work experience (i.e. practising managers)
- Working towards an NVQ level 5 in Management
- Requiring professional management training and / or updating
- Aspiring to a management role in the near future
- Professional Development Award in Supervisory Management
- National Certificate/Diploma in Business (BNC/D)
- A relevant level 3 Certificate in First Line Management
Successful completion of an interview with a member of the programme team is also a requirement in all cases.
Programmme Outline
Each programme runs over an academic year and requires attendance at college of one day every two weeks. There is also a weekend residential period each year.

Assessment
There are no examinations on this programme, which incorporates a policy of continuous assessment of both group and individual assignments. These include written assignments and project work. To achieve a pass in a module candidates must complete all components of that module. To achieve the award, candidates must pass all modules and demonstrate evidence of achieving the management competencies.
Collaborative Learning
Collaborative learning or cooperative learning is an instructional approach in which students of varying abilities and interests work together in small groups to solve a problem, complete a project, or achieve a common goal.
We use collaborative learning approach via:
- E-learning - to create flexibility among learners so they access their learning materials at any time and any where without taking their time off from their workplace
- Residential Weekend Programme - to integrate management theory into practice
Quality Assurance
The programme has a Course Team Leader and Programme Manager and is delivered by well-qualified staff. Programme Board meetings are held where representatives of staff and participants meet to discuss relevant issues. PATH National's Client Support Manager is the main point of contact, and provides general support to course tutors and participants on college days at PATH.
